This year in US history I have learned a lot. We covered all sorts of topics from immigration to the cold war. I have enjoyed every part of this year, especially the movies. My favorite movie that we have watched this year was Smoke Signals. I enjoyed this movie because it was funny and interesting because it gave us a better understanding of Native American Culture. History has also made be a better student because it has made me think in different ways about different topics. Our final movie that we watched, 13 days, was a lot better than I expected it too. The movie was about the Cuban missile crisis and took you behind the scenes in the US government on how they solved the problem. This topic was one that I did not know much about and this movie gave me a much better understanding on what happen.

Letter for the People of 2216

Dear People of 2216,

The 21st century is full of all kinds of change. Some change for the good and some for the bad. Unfortunately, our time has brought many  new terror organizations around the world. However, change for the better has also happened. For the technology of the world has changed rapidly, and for the better. Technology has allowed us to find new things about our world. It has let us see our climate in a more detailed form. This can be both good and bad. It can be good because it allows us to see what is changing and what we need to do to fix it if we have too. It can be bad though, but only for the general public. It can be bad because it gives the public a realistic view of their world which can scare most of us. As you can see, we need to teach climate to our younger generations to change and be prepared for this problem. But in today’s world, Climate is taught in many different ways in our schools while teachers teach what they want, when they want about climate which needs to be changed.
In our time, The United States is widely recognized as the world leader in climate change research. According to Nasa’s webpage on Climate(1), most climate scientists agree that the main cause of the current global warming in 2016 trend is human expansion of the “Greenhouse Effect” which is the warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Gases that contribute to the Greenhouse effect include: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. On Earth today, human activities are changing the natural Greenhouse. Over the last century, the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased that concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. So what must we do to teach our generation about the change in the climate?
Today teachers bring all kinds of topics about climate change into the classroom. According to the results of a survey on NPR(2) with 1500 teachers across America. At least one in three teachers(4) bring up climate change denial into the classroom, claiming that many scientists believe climate change is not caused by humans. This goes against most active climate scientists beliefs. More than 97% of climate scientists believe that global warming is caused mainly by human activities. Along with this, the average student receives between 1 to 2 hours of climate change lessons a week according to Climate Access(3). Compare this to the other subjects. In 2016, most students go to school 40 hours a week, which comes out to about 8 hours a day. So imagine only 2 of those 40 hours are spent teaching kids about climate change, which is a crazy statistic.
In an interview with the Randolph Head of School, Jay Rainey, he expressed to us that he believes that having an awareness of our environment is extremely important. He also said something that I personally had never thought of and that was that it is not the earth that is fragile but humans themselves are fragile. People today are more worried about saving a species of animals such as the panda, who are hopefully alive when you're reading this because they are awesome, rather than focusing on the human Race.
Despite all of the good sources on Climate change teachers don’t use them. Many teachers “don’t have time” to find these resources. This is why 3 out 4 teachers are misinformed or unaware of climate change. Only 15% of Americans teachers believe that climate change is caused by humans and only 2% of teachers believe it is happening. Students and younger generations need to know what is going on with climate change. They are the future of the human race. If people don’t know what is wrong or what they need to do it want happen.
In conclusion, if teachers don’t teach themselves about climate change they can’t teach others. Today’s students are the future and need to be educated well so they can impact it. If our students don’t learn the proper aspects of climate change they will not know what to do to fix it and even prevent it in the future. The earth itself is not endangered of dying any time soon, it has another 5 billion years to go. However, humans are what are at risk. Our window of livable conditions is tiny. If it gets below 0 to a certain point we are done, same with anything over 100. As average temperatures rise our window closes and students today need to learn about this and learn to fix it.

Sincerely,
Carson and Thomas

  1. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA is a United States government agency that is responsible for science and technology related to air and space. The Space Age started in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik.NASA was created in 1958. The article told us about the greenhouse effect and how it worked
  2. National Public Radio is an American privately and publicly funded non-profit media organization that serves as a national syndicator to a network of 900 public radio stations in the United States of America.
  3. Climate Access is a global network of climate and clean energy communicators, serving more than 2,000 members in 57 countries. It told us about the survey about teachers and what teachers are doing in the classroom when it comes to climate.
  4. I learned this fact from Science Alert.com. According to science alert’s website it was established in 2004 by Julian Cribb (Founding Editor) with the aim of sharing knowledge and promoting science.

What Have I learned?

In my research, I started out by trying to learn about how schools teach climate. I started off by searching about general info on schools and climate education. My research led me to Climate Access.org. This website told me info about how schools are teaching about climate change into days weather. It explained how the US is the leading country for climate research. I also wanted to learn about how teaching climate is challenging. This led me to the NPR website where I read an article about why science teachers are having trouble teaching about climate change. It talked about how most teachers are teaching the wrong stuff about climate.

For the rest of the research process, I hope to learn more about what teachers are teaching. According to a ThinkProgress article teachers are teaching that climate change is mainly caused by natural causes. However, teachers aren't teaching kids that 97% of climate researchers agree that climate change is caused by humans. This could be caused by the question, Why should we care. I hope to learn more about this in future research.

Climate Research

I would like to learn about the history and sociology of climate because it would give me a better understanding of climate rather than just weather. Also what climate does to a society as a whole and the people within one.

Climate

  1. Weather
  2. Tropical
  3. Rain
  4. Clouds
  5. Hot

I picked these words because when I hear the word climate I think of different kinds of weather for different weather.

Question -  What climates are associated with certain regions?

Homework 4/14/2016

According to this article, what was wrong with President Hoover's response?  Why did people blame themselves when things went wrong, and how valid or invalid was this response?

Answer - President Hoover underestimated the seriousness of the crisis and believed that it would pass in 60 days. He then created the New Deal program which gave relief to those he need it.

How would you have felt if you'd been there on that day? What kinds of fears, concerns, or questions would be going through your mind during, and after, the event described?

Answer - If I was there, I would have thought that the world was ending. Seeing a black cloud that looks like it goes from the ground to the sky and was completely dark I would definitely think I was about to die.

What areas were affected by it?  What caused it.  The author ends this article with a pithy quote.  Do you agree or disagree with this historian's perspective? Why or why not?

Answer - The Drought first hit the eastern part of the country in 1930 and by 1931 it started to move west. Yes, because Americans where not using the environment they were given properly.

Were does the migration of people out of the Dust Bowl rank in terms of other migrations in US History?  What made life hard for people once they arrived in California?

Answer - The migration after the dust bowl was the largest in American History. The farms in the west were modernized and corporately owned and most of the migrants worked in the fields picking cotton and grapes making up $1.25.

Speech questions

1) I think the speeches as a whole where good and everyone mentioned a little of everything.
2) I think Carson's stare down was good, but both Ward and Madi's speeches were well presented and easy to understand.
3) One thing that I learned was just to try and be more comfortable and speak slower and clearer. Also on the speech itself, space it out more to make it easier to read.

The Harlem Renaissance By: Forrest Webber

The Harlem Renaissance By: Forrest Webber, is pure gold. It talks about a man by the name Aaron Douglas, who has created some of the significant pieces of art. It talks about his want to see the great Duke Ellington and hoppers. Webber tells Douglas's experience meeting the "swanky" Alain Locke and how he hopes the people will learn to talk about the and appreciate the African American Culture .

A book review of "The Life of a Normal Guy in the 1920's"

The life of a Normal guy in the 1920's, by Karen Carter shows the rough days he experiences. He tells how he walks down the streets seeing ruebens thinking they are all that. He continues to talk about his experience watching the Klu Klux Klan talk about hatred against all foreigners and how they thought they were the big cheese. He continues to talk about how David Stephenson, head of the Indian clan, took someone for a ride and how it declined the Klu Klux Klan.

WWI Propaganda

Propaganda is a form a advertisement that the government used during a time of war to get people to by bonds or enlist in the military.

Real propaganda definition.  information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc. ( Dictionary.com )

In the following pictures-  In the first picture the first thing that I noticed was that the sleeping women is dressed in a dress with pattern of the American Flag on it. The next thing that I noticed was that every word on the poster is capitalized, which makes the poster more intense to me.

The second picture the first thing I notice is that the whole idea of this poster was a play on king Kong, even thought king Kong had not come out yet. There is a large gorilla holding a women. In the hand of the gorilla there is a stick that says "kulture", which is Bosnian for culture and Bosnia was part of Austria during this time. Also the gorilla is standing on soil that says America. So the point of this one is to get people to stop foreign culture from spreading into america.

The third picture I noticed that the large face holding the bloody knife. This man is most likely German because the words say "beat back the Hun". It also is asking people to by liberty bonds, which is how the war was funded and was how they were going to "beat back the Hun".

1. The author is trying to make people realize that America is at war and that they need people to help prepare goods and fight. The author uses the phrase "Civilization calls you"
which implies that not only does America need you but the world needs you.

2. The author uses the gorilla holding the bat that says "Kulture" and who is standing on "american soil" to get people to enlist so they can keep foreign culture out.

3. The author uses the mean, dark grey face holding the knife to spark anger in the Americans or who ever is viewing this so that they will buy bonds to fund the war.

At this point in time I am okay with the government spending money on stuff like this because they had no television and radio was hard to come by, so they needed some way to spread the message and get people to enlist or buy bonds.

I think the government felt they needed to do this because they believed people were oblivious to what was happening and they wanted to spread the word that America was at war and they needed soldiers and to sell bonds.

The Living Essay

I worked with Madison and Karen to join our progressive topics into one essay.

-Intro-

During the Progressive Era mass health regulations along with recognition of the benefits of a healthier lifestyle lead to a more informed society that was more conscious of their personal hygiene. The innovation of the Gillette Razor helped lead men to create a better standpoint of personal hygiene, while women were looking up to Annie Oakley as a role model for women’s health and respect of their bodies. The Influenza pandemic of 1918 lead to an overhaul of health regulations that would help increase the quality of life of everyday citizens, men or women.

-Conclusion-

Had it not been for the quick thinking and influential figures of the time period like Annie Oakley and King Camp Gillette the importance of personal hygiene would not have been so widely accepted. These steps towards betterment of health made the mass reformation of health regulations, after the “Spanish Flu” pandemic more widely accepted and easier to enforce. Had Progressivism not taken such drastic measures to change the way American’s live, would we still be living in third-world conditions?

The Gillette Razor

King Camp Gillette
In this article I learned that men had tried so many ways to shave. They had started using seashells, sharpened rocks, and Metal. Later in the 18th century, the straight Razor was created. It allowed for a close shave and was so durable that it could last for years. However, the razor was dangerous. It was also expensive and hard to keep sharp. In 1880 Otto and Fredrick Kampfe invented the safety razor, which left only part of the Razor exposed. In 1890, King Camp Gillette looked for an idea that would make him rich. He wanted to make a razor blade that was so inexpensive and thin that it could be throw out. In 1901, Gillette, William Nickerson and others had found the American Safety Razor Company. William Nickerson was the man that designed the blades that Gillette wanted. In 1901 Gillette had only sold 51 razors, but as time went on that increased. Gillette sold his razors at a low price because he new that the company would make a profit from the replacement blades that they sold. Gillette blades also got to see some war action. During the first World War Gillette was the main supplier of razors for the Army, he supplied the razors for a Low Rate which made it easier for the Army. In the February 19th edition of The Daily Shave in 1922 Gillette talks about his invention. He said, " I was so poor that I didn't have enough money to take out the patents. It was 1904 before I could put the razor on the market The First razor I made was the same principle as the razor sold today." He went on to say how much women effected the market and how 100,000 razors were sold to women in 1921. Gillette invention was game changing and his company still exists to this day.
Gillette's razors were revolutionary for the time. His razor was based of the regular design of the straight razor but only with replaceable blades. During this time men were consistently cutting themselves with the traditional straight razors. The original blade was made out of carbon steel. Although they were able to cut through whiskers easily they also corroded easily. During the progressive era, people wanted better hygiene. So the idea of a blade the would corrode easily was not popular. Millions of men decided to switch to the stainless steel, which didn't corrode easily, but they still cut skin easy as well. I learned that Gillette came out with the 2 blade shave which provided a clean and safe shave.

Self Reflection

So far in the 3rd quarter I have enjoyed watching movies about the different topics and understanding their point of view on the topic.. The harder reading questions are not my favorite, but I think after a while I will began to understand them better. The analyzing of the political cartoons was interesting but I did not really see the point of it. As the quarter continues and we go into the 4th quarter I hope to be able to watch more interesting movies and hopefully have a fun and cool project.

Progress

1. Progress is improving a thing or society a little bit as a time; moving forward.
2. The progressive era was a time in the United States that was widely based on social activism and political reform from the 1890's to 1920's.
3. During the progressive era they exposed corruption in the government. They believed that family was the base stone of America so they decreased average working time so that people could spend time with families. They also tried to permanently fix their reforms into law through the 16-19 amendments. They created prohibition, which outlawed the manufacture, sale and transport of alcohol.
4. A lot of the reforms were about to ban or fix things in the country to fix the corruption.
5. Their idea for creating more family time is a good idea but not that important for the success of the country. Putting the reforms into law would be a important task. The creation of prohibition would go would with family which is not that important.

Future

  1. The Open Culture article is talking about the predictions of Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. Most of their predictions are revolved around the world of science.  In the BBC article they talked about some of the predictions in the day to day life. Some of the predictions are Mobile phones and pre-prepared meals. In the mental floss article they talk about things such as roofed cities and undersea ships.
  2. I think that the open culture article was more of a wish list but the BBC and the Mental Floss articles are more what will happen.
  3. Some predictions that came true are the flying machine, pre-prepared  food, mobile phones, and Tanks.
  4. In a lot of these lists, most of the predictions are revolved around space travel, while some predictions that are true revolve around day to day life.
  5. For me, I think within the next 100 years humans will have been to Mars and started creating a civilization. I also think that the self driving car will become a more reliable and realistic thing. I also believe that virtual reality will become a more common thing in the day to day life. Personally I believe that money will also become almost useless.
  6. I think that humans have some control over the future. However, Humans will only have control if the choose too. People can dream a great idea, but it will always be a dream until reality takes it. Institutions and government will have some control on what can and will be invented.

How Do You Analyze a Political Cartoon

Something that I already new about trying to analyzing political cartoons was that it is best to look and analyze the symbols and Irony within the Cartoon. I learned that some artists tend to over tell or exaggerate certain points in the Cartoon, and also that some will also use labeling in their work. Going forward I will start to pay more attention to the words in the work along with keeping an I out for anything that might be over told. When I am analyzing cartoon I will most likely use the guide on the Library of Congress website.

After US took Philippians
1. This Cartoon is of Uncle Sam welcoming American Businessmen to the Philippians for them to expand the market. Americans believed that imperialist expansion was necessary for america to mature as a country.

Spanish American War

The Americans came into Cuba to get rid of the misrule, so the pan represents the Americans flipping the government and getting rid of the Spanish misrule.
Spanish American War

This Cartoon represents Uncle Sam carrying the American fleet to Cuba to give them there freedom. They use Uncle Sam because he is a sign of Freedom for america.

Eddie Aikau - The Legend Of

I believe that they called this documentary "Hawaiian, The Legend of Eddie Aikau" because filmmakers wanted to show that Eddie was a native Hawaiian and that no one knows what happen to him. The angle was that Eddie Aikau not only a important piece of the surfing culture but also the Hawaiian culture as a whole and the fact that he spent so much time and effort devoting his life to the Hawaiian surfing culture and Hawaii itself makes his story on essential for building appreciation and understanding or Hawaiian culture. Since ESPN made the documentary we can understand that it was more focused on the surfing and his growth in the sport rather than Eddie's personal life. If this documentary was made by PBS or The History Channel, they would have focused more on his personal life rather than his surfing.

Subject - Theodore Roosevelt
Focus - It would Focus on his accomplishes as an American President.
Angle - The angle for the film would be that Theodore Roosevelt used his experience leading men in the Spanish-American war to help him lead America to a better place by his strong policies while in office.

Phrenology

Today my group and I were tasked to observe of ceramic head about L.N. Fowler. Each person went up 1 by 1 to observe the head and wrote down what the observed. While my group was doing this, I was tasked to observe them. I was supposed to write down what each person did while researching, such as words they searched and what it lead them too.

Provenance - the place of origin or earliest known history of something; the record of ownership of a work of art or antique, used as a guide to authenticity or quality.
