Frank Lloyd Wright

Throughout the years, architecture has seen many changes in the people design it. First we started building dirt huts to building complex houses and skyscrapers. One of the most influential and famous architects that helped change his was Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright influenced many of the modern design techniques and styles. Wright created the prairie style of house known as the “Prairie school” and also had a lot of influence in the Arts and Crafts movement during the later part of the 19th century.
Hill Side Home School

Frank Lloyd Wright was born June 8, 1867 in Richland Center Wisconsin. He later moved Chicago, Illinois in 1887 and became the apprentice of of J. Lyman Silsbee who was the designer of the All Souls Unitarian Church. One of Frank Lloyd Wright’s first works was the Hillside Home school in 1888, which was near Springside, Illinois. Wright designed and built the school for his aunts. Some of Wright’s first Commissions were for primarily for design of private housing in the Chicago suburbs. The houses he designed were primarily designed for wealthy and middle-class families. One of his early designs was the W.H.Winslow house of 1893-1894. This house is located in Forest Hill, Illinois. Wright was the designer of over 200 homes and buildings, but only around 50 were ever built. Unfortunately many of Wright's house’s from his time were lost during the turn of the 19th to 20th century.
Frank Lloyd Wright, like many architects, came up with his own design. His design was highly influenced by nature and its beauty. His design was known as prairie style, but some called it "Prairie School". During the late 19th and 20th century the Prairie School became popular mainly in the midwestern United States. However, its roots are primarily in Chicago where Wright is from. The design usually incorporated horizontal line, flat or hipped roofs with overhang, windows that were grouped in horizontal bands , and was highly integrated with the landscape. Wright's initial idea of having his own design was to create his own indigenous North American style of Architecture, which American did not have. His designs were usually single-story, no garage, limited storage, and was usually L-shaped to fit a garden in on the odd lots within Chicago.
Robie House
W.H. Winslow House

The first prairie house he designed was the W.W. Willits house, which was built in the suburbs of Chicago, Highland Park, Illinois. It was the first house to incorporate all of the elements of a prairie house. It was designed with 4 wings surrounding the fireplace. However, one of the most famous houses to use this design was the Robie house (pictured above), which was considered one of Wright’s masterpiece, which was built in Chicago in 1909. It is one of the view Wright houses still standing today. Wright's Prairie style was also part of a 1901 publication of “A Home in a Prairie” which he designed for the Ladies Home Journal.
Frank Lloyd Wright began creating his own design around the same time as the Arts and Crafts movement. The Arts and Crafts movement was one thing that influenced Wright's personal design heavily. The movement Initially began in England in the later half of the 19th century. It was meant to challenge the taste of the victorian era. The movement was also heavily influenced the social concerns of thinkers like Walter Crane and John Ruskin. Ruskin believed that the decorative arts affected the men who produced them, which means what the man makes is what the man is. A lot of the aesthetic designs of the art were borrowed from the Medieval European and Islamic sources. However, there was some japanese influence early on. The whole purpose of the movement was to stress the importance of the craftsmanship at the expense of mass marketing, which caused the the items to be more expensive and only afforded by wealthy people.
Frank Lloyd Wright was, without question, one of the greatest architects ever. He created new designs that changed the way we view the world of architecture. He helped the world change from building simple dule homes to creating elegant and affordable homes available to all. He did this by creating the Prairie style homes and using the Arts and Crafts movement to aid his designs.

What I learned today

Today I learned many things about people and where they come from. The one country that has a little bit of every one is the the United states. Throughout my research I discovered that there is at least one person from every country in the States. I also learned a lot about how people identify themselves racially. Some people base it off of their culture and some base it off their heritage, while some base it off their skin. I learned a lot of new things about race and immigration and hope to learn more.

Thoughts on Philanthropy

Throughout this assignment I learned a lot about philanthropy that I did not know. I learned how it differs from charity. To me philanthropy is more of a world wide thing. Philanthropists do more work across the world compared to charities, who focus their work on local problems. Also philanthropy is more of a long term thing. Philanthropists do their work over time, instead of just doing over a few days.

Thinking About Success

1. Hard Work
2. Opportunity
3. Luck
4. Skill

The reason I put hard work first was because without Hard work and effort you will get no where. The reason I put opportunity second is because no matter how much work you put in or how good you are at your skill you have to use opportunity to broadcast yourself in order to be successful. I put luck third because it is not the most important part of being successful but is does play a part. I put skill last because, although it's important, it is not as important as the the first three. If you cannot put yourself or product out there for others to see it won't get anywhere. If you don't put in the work that product will never exist.

Exploring Business / Clothing Industry

Zara's Factory
Today I learned a lot about the clothing and fashion Industry I did not know about. I learned about all the things that are required to get a company up and running and stay running. In the article's we read it talked about how every company had a distribution center that was usually separate from the factories themselves. Zara's for example talked about how no matter which factory a product came from it always went through there center in Spain and then went to the stores.  It also talks about how quickly the companies work to get new items out. The Zara article talked about they would ship new designs twice a week. I never knew how much work there was and how quickly the work got done in this industry.

Classwork 10/26/2015

In this activity I read a few pages in an online text book about what the Indians where like when the settlers first arrived. It talked about their way of life and how it changed throughout the seasons. They also mentioned about the roles of people and how women for example would usually have a small farm of corn that they would tend to. I also looked up the word savages in the book to see how often it was used and to get an idea of what it meant. Based on what I read, the word savage is used to describe a person or group of people that are ruthless and fierce fighters. As an American student reading this, my view of the Indians is that the are a fierce, but loyal group of people who value each other.

Newspapers Pt.2

In the article that I read, they talked about a shooting in Seattle. It was between two farmers and Indians over some stolen items. Both Indians where killed and the two farmers fled. A few days later Indians sent runners up and down the Baker River to gather all of the Indians to the grand council. The people were worried about a Indian outbreak, where Indians started to cause trouble around the area and to the people. Another article talked about a fight between to drunken squaws where one ended up dead after the fight. They talked about how both of them where drunk and that they both received their liquor from a man named Cannon. Then they talked about how the town wanted to kick him out, since they had discovered that he had been selling alcohol to Indians for years.

Homework Letter:

So today seems to be a dreary day, since it rained this morning and more is suppose to come. It seems that my cousin O.F. Richardson is suppose to arrive today from Oakland on the Southern Pacific line. I will have to take him with me to see the new lines of Dry and Fancy goods over at the Merchandise store. They just got the new line of Flannels and Waterproofs which he will be happy about. They found a dead body in the Virgin Alley between 2nd and 3rd streets. They authorities believe that it was a result of foul play. There was another murder in Tuscan where a man tried to rage a young Mexican girl, but her father showed up and got rid of him. However, he came back and kill the brother, a 30 year old man, and a shot also struck the girl. Unfortunately the man got away.

Deep Thinking

"Our use of social media for news is selective and intentional so that we may tend to remain interested only in things that we are already interested in. On the other hand professional news outlets like newspapers expose readers to information on a broad range of topics, this helps me to see what other people are interested in or thinks is important." - Mrs. Lawson

The Newspaper's History

A newspaper is a piece of printed media that can be released either daily or weekly. Most times the paper will be divided into certain topics, such as sports, business, and politics, while also containing ads on each page. The front page of each paper usually contain the most important news. One of the oldest connections to the modern newspaper was in 16th century Venice. Pieces of handwritten news would circulate the city, which leads some to believe that Venice play a large role in the development of the modern newspaper since it was a large trade center. Some of the oldest papers in the US are the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Post, and the Wall Street journal all of which are still published today.
New York Times Issue before World War One
In major city’s papers such as the New York Times, people receive news on almost everything that happens. In the newest edition of the digital New York Times there are lots of small articles on current events such as Politics and the presidential race and events happening along the border. To be a newspaper of public record means, that the paper is widely known and read daily and has been authorized to publish public and legal notices to the public. There are currently three newspapers of record in the US, which are the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. The New York Times in fact was the Nation’s first designated Newspaper of Record.
Today we have many ways to find out our news. Some people of started using social media such as Twitter and Facebook rather than reading it in a newspaper. Reading your news on social media is much different from reading from a paper of some sort. This because with a newspaper you are limited in what you learn, the publisher can determine what they want you to know as the reader. While social media on the other hand allows you to be more interactive. With social media being on the internet people can search the topic and learn even more or they are able to comment on and article and ask questions to the author directly.

Q1 Reflection

This quarter I have learned many different things about American History that I was not aware of at first and I have also had many of the facts that I already knew confirmed. The most recent topic we discussed about the mid west has been my favorite topic yet. I have always enjoyed learning about the mid west, which is why I enjoyed learning about the immigrants, cowboys, and industrial innovations of the time.  During this topic I also learned a lot about how to properly take notes on reading assignments.
Before this year I was the worst at paraphrasing and being able to Identifying a high-quality source. The assignment that we did in the middle of the quarter on how to paraphrase helped me understand it a lot better. Before I had a problem with just quoting a large portion of text to use, but now I have a better understanding on how to properly paraphrase. Also I had never thought of the use of empathy to understand historical events. Before I just accepted what the teacher told us, but now I have a different perspective on it all.

I have always been pretty good on figuring out tech problems, but honestly I never really paid much attention to the simple things such as hyper linking, creating a blog , and how to caption images. As the year goes on, I hope to learn about more recent events such as the Vietnam war and what it was really about.

Native American Mascot Research

For the past 30 years there has been many different arguments about us of Native Americans as mascots for sports team. One of the most well known arguments is of the Washington Redskins. The NFL commissioner conducted a pole in 2013 about whether or not the name was offensive to Native Americans. However, the people who took part in the survey were individuals who claimed then self's to be Indians which is why they did not take offense. While in an interview, real Native Americans expressed there true feeling about the team's name, which was that most Indians did take offense to the name and wanted a name change in the future. This is just one of the controversy's about the use of Indians as mascots. Controversy's like this have been seen throughout all professional sports and will always be seen.

Film Essay

Thomas Beckman - Film Essay - 9/17/2015  - H Block

People throughout the world watch movies for many different reasons. Some watch just purely for entertainment, while some people watch for a better understanding of historical events. Movies can be a great and sometime the only way to get a visual representation of famous events. In our history class we have watched both Glory and 12 Years a Slave both are great representation of the events the are about. Both of these movies express the effect of slavery on blacks in both the North and South.
Solomen
12 Years a Slave is a true story which is about a man by the name of Solomen who was a free African American during the time of slavery. The movie takes place during the mid 1800’s and talks about the rough life Solomen went through after he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Throughout the movie Solomen is treated just as any other slave was treated, if not worse. This movie challenges the viewer to put themselves in Solomen’s shoes and try to overcome the adversities that Solomen has to overcome himself. As Steve mcqueen said, “This is the Anne Frank diary of America”. This is because of their both of their circumstances they were in. Anne Frank was trying to hide from the Nazis in World War II, while Solomen was trying to hide his true self during the mid 1800’s in America. Steve Mcqueen also stated that through “the power of cinema” he was able to help other people tell their stories. During an interview he talked about this woman whose grandfather was poisoned for trying to teach slaves to read and write. This is probably why it won many top awards such as, both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for best picture and Scott Mendelson of Forbes said “‘12 years a slave’ is among the year's best films.”
On the other hand, Glory is talking more on the fact that slavery affected every black man was viewed, weather they were free or not. Glory is about 54th regiment of the Union Army during the Civil war, which was an all black unit. The movie takes the viewer through the creation and lifespan of the 54th. It shows the lack of respect for the 54th from the rest of the Union Army. This is expressed through the scenes of the 54th’s Commander Shaw, being rejected items such as uniforms, shoes, and a chance to fight. Throughout the movie the 54th is used as a manual labor unit that clears paths for the army. The director of the movie tried to put the viewer in the 54th and make you understand what it was like.
Movies are a great resource to get a better understanding of history of all kinds. Movies such as, Glory and 12 Years a Slave, let us explore and be a part of major historical events. Unlike books or lectures movies allow us to be both mentally and visually there in the story, it lets us be a part of the story, and it allows you build a better understanding of your own about the story, which you can compare and relate to the ideas of other people through research. They also can expose certain truths about history that make us reconsider different Ideas that already exist.

Practicing Incorporating a Quotation

If someone were to ask me how accurate the Film Glory was I would lead them to this article, which was written by Film Critic that uses historical documents for there research.

"I found one of the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw online, which generally verifies the burning of the town which was shown in the film." Film Critic

Today I learned that when you are talking about a quote you should always introduce it before you start to explain. Using quotes helps you solidify an idea because if provides textual evidence. Paraphrasing is much more completed. I learned that when paraphrasing you should never use exact phrases or words that the original used, and that you should reword everything almost to your own.

What Mrs.Lawson Wanted me to Learn:

  • Only use a quote when it adds power and style to my writing.
  • Always make it clear, from context, that I understand the full meaning of the quote.
  • Whether I quote or paraphrase, always be transparent about the source and how I'm using it.
  • If I use another Author's exact words or phrases, to any extent, I have to use quotation marks to give credit.
  • If I use another authors presentation of facts or ideas, but put their ideas in my own words, I better have a good reason for doing that, and I MUST give credit.
  • Hyperlinking is so easy, there is no excuse for not being transparent about my sources.

I really understand these things.

Paraphrase a Qoute

"The assault on Battery Wagner was attacked on the wrong side in the movie, and it also suggests that over ½ of the regiment was lost during the assault. However, official records state that they had 272 casualties, which is closer to 40%. Lastly, the way in which they whipped and flagged the black soldiers is historically inaccurate because the practice of flogging had been outlawed before the civil war, and Robert would not have whipped them because it symbolizes slavery, which is what they were trying to abolish." This is from Marked by Teachers.com

In other words when they depicted the 54th attacking Fort Wagner the showed them attacking on the wrong side of the Fort. They also showed that of half of the regiment during the assault, while in reality they only lost 272 men, 40% of the regiment,  according to official records. Finally, the whipping and flogging of the black soldiers was in fact unlawful during the Civil War, due to the fact that the union was working their way to abolish slavery and the abusement of the soldiers symbolized slavery.

Empathy & History

The difference between empathy and sympathy is quite simple. I learned that empathy is where someone is able to understand one's problem even if they have not experienced the problem. While sympathy is where you feel piety for one's misfortune. For example I am able to understand why Japaneses Pilots would carry out Kamikaze attacks in World War II because it would bring honor to their family in their culture. Empathy is helpful in History because it allows us to understand both sides of all of the conflict in the past.

Empathy
