Classwork 10/26/2015
In this activity I read a few pages in an online text book about what the Indians where like when the settlers first arrived. It talked about their way of life and how it changed throughout the seasons. They also mentioned about the roles of people and how women for example would usually have a small farm of corn that they would tend to. I also looked up the word savages in the book to see how often it was used and to get an idea of what it meant. Based on what I read, the word savage is used to describe a person or group of people that are ruthless and fierce fighters. As an American student reading this, my view of the Indians is that the are a fierce, but loyal group of people who value each other.

Newspapers Pt.2
In the article that I read, they talked about a shooting in Seattle. It was between two farmers and Indians over some stolen items. Both Indians where killed and the two farmers fled. A few days later Indians sent runners up and down the Baker River to gather all of the Indians to the grand council. The people were worried about a Indian outbreak, where Indians started to cause trouble around the area and to the people. Another article talked about a fight between to drunken squaws where one ended up dead after the fight. They talked about how both of them where drunk and that they both received their liquor from a man named Cannon. Then they talked about how the town wanted to kick him out, since they had discovered that he had been selling alcohol to Indians for years.

Homework Letter:
So today seems to be a dreary day, since it rained this morning and more is suppose to come. It seems that my cousin O.F. Richardson is suppose to arrive today from Oakland on the Southern Pacific line. I will have to take him with me to see the new lines of Dry and Fancy goods over at the Merchandise store. They just got the new line of Flannels and Waterproofs which he will be happy about. They found a dead body in the Virgin Alley between 2nd and 3rd streets. They authorities believe that it was a result of foul play. There was another murder in Tuscan where a man tried to rage a young Mexican girl, but her father showed up and got rid of him. However, he came back and kill the brother, a 30 year old man, and a shot also struck the girl. Unfortunately the man got away.

Deep Thinking
"Our use of social media for news is selective and intentional so that we may tend to remain interested only in things that we are already interested in. On the other hand professional news outlets like newspapers expose readers to information on a broad range of topics, this helps me to see what other people are interested in or thinks is important." - Mrs. Lawson

The Newspaper's History
A newspaper is a piece of printed media that can be released either daily or weekly. Most times the paper will be divided into certain topics, such as sports, business, and politics, while also containing ads on each page. The front page of each paper usually contain the most important news. One of the oldest connections to the modern newspaper was in 16th century Venice. Pieces of handwritten news would circulate the city, which leads some to believe that Venice play a large role in the development of the modern newspaper since it was a large trade center. Some of the oldest papers in the US are the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Post, and the Wall Street journal all of which are still published today.

In major city’s papers such as the New York Times, people receive news on almost everything that happens. In the newest edition of the digital New York Times there are lots of small articles on current events such as Politics and the presidential race and events happening along the border. To be a newspaper of public record means, that the paper is widely known and read daily and has been authorized to publish public and legal notices to the public. There are currently three newspapers of record in the US, which are the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. The New York Times in fact was the Nation’s first designated Newspaper of Record.
Today we have many ways to find out our news. Some people of started using social media such as Twitter and Facebook rather than reading it in a newspaper. Reading your news on social media is much different from reading from a paper of some sort. This because with a newspaper you are limited in what you learn, the publisher can determine what they want you to know as the reader. While social media on the other hand allows you to be more interactive. With social media being on the internet people can search the topic and learn even more or they are able to comment on and article and ask questions to the author directly.

Q1 Reflection
This quarter I have learned many different things about
American History that I was not aware of at first and I have also had many of
the facts that I already knew confirmed. The most recent topic we discussed
about the mid west has been my favorite topic yet. I have always enjoyed
learning about the mid west, which is why I enjoyed learning about the
immigrants, cowboys, and industrial innovations of the time. During this topic I also learned a lot about how
to properly take notes on reading assignments.
Before this year I was the worst at paraphrasing and being
able to Identifying a high-quality source. The assignment that we did in the
middle of the quarter on how to paraphrase helped me understand it a lot
better. Before I had a problem with just quoting a large portion of text to
use, but now I have a better understanding on how to properly paraphrase. Also
I had never thought of the use of empathy to understand historical events.
Before I just accepted what the teacher told us, but now I have a different
perspective on it all.
I have always been pretty good on figuring out tech problems,
but honestly I never really paid much attention to the simple things such as hyper
linking, creating a blog , and how to caption images. As the year goes on, I
hope to learn about more recent events such as the Vietnam war and what it was
really about.
Native American Mascot Research
For the past 30 years there has been many different arguments about us of Native Americans as mascots for sports team. One of the most well known arguments is of the Washington Redskins. The NFL commissioner conducted a pole in 2013 about whether or not the name was offensive to Native Americans. However, the people who took part in the survey were individuals who claimed then self's to be Indians which is why they did not take offense. While in an interview, real Native Americans expressed there true feeling about the team's name, which was that most Indians did take offense to the name and wanted a name change in the future. This is just one of the controversy's about the use of Indians as mascots. Controversy's like this have been seen throughout all professional sports and will always be seen.
